The character for which Tartuffe is named is an evil hypocrite that puts his so called faith on display for the world to throw. Likewise, many Christians petition forte and serve publicly just so everyone can see how godly they are being. However, this is specifically forbidden in Matthew chapter six, which states, Do non be like the hypocrites, for they like to stand and pray… that they can be seen by others. The church as a whole is ignorant of this verse in practice; preferably often, prayers are said for the benefit of ones experience reputation, not ones relationship with God. In this way, Tartuffe accurately symbolizes the Christian church from an atheist view.
Orgon, on the other hand, represents Christians, or church followers. Orgon had loved Tartuffe like a son, and he had bought in to Tartuffes display of religiousness. Likewise, Christians hang on the churchs every word and are ignorant of the churchs sins.
Orgon refused to believe that Tartuffe had betrayed him even when his own son testified against Tartuffe. Only when Orgon see Tartuffes sinfulness with his own eyes did he work his fraud. This is equivalent to Christians standing up for the church without knowing what the church stands for. When a logical atheist tries to reason with a Christian, the Christian blindly follows the church until he sees the churchs hypocrisy firsthand.
