This paper is an inquiry through and through the food retailing segment in our country and its material growth amongst different socio economic class. Despite its stupendous growth, the retailers in India face certain ch allenges which hinder the fortune of their growth. It identifies and highlights various challenges which be faced by the retailers, the probable solutions, the role of government and the initiatives to be taken by them to eradicate those problems. In India the vast shopping c embark class and its almost untapped retail patience ar the key attractive forces for global retail giants involveing to enter into newer markets, which in turn will help this industry to grow faster. The paper explores through many facades of the food retailing industry in India, such as, evolution of this industry, food retailing formats in India, growth of the industry in this country, emerging trends in the industry, opportunity for retailing in agri business and the challenges.
