An essay is a written account about a person, an experience, an event a discovery etc which seeks to explain or discuss the subject matter. College students are required at many levels, to write a college essay as part of their learning process. When called upon to do this, a college student must know what he or she requires knowing that will enable him or her to give a good essay.
The raw material for a good essay is good language. Knowing the different aspects of language such as grammar, vocabulary, spelling etc is important if one intends to write good essay. A good essay, they say is smartly woven with error free language. Errors in essay writing are destructive as they give the impression that the essay is poorly written. One must remember that an essay is written to attract readership and not correction of mistakes.
This simply means that the writer should not make the reader’s work difficult by calling for his or her correction of the essay every time. The time taken to prepare and write the essay determines its freedom from such errors. A writer of essay for college should at least undergo the four stages of writing which are the preparation or prewriting stage, the drafting stage, the editing or revision stage and the rewriting stage.
This stage, if well adhered to, will ensure that the essay the writer writes is interesting, accurate on its facts, free of errors and is specific on its audience among other positive qualities. At this level of essay writing, it is expected that the writer is grammatically mature enough not to commit careless grammatical mistakes.
