The German president Gustav Heinemann welcomed the Olympics. He said, a milestone on the road to a new way of life with the aim of realizing peaceful coexistence among peoples. Sadly however his argument was not heard by the arab terrorists. At approximately four-spot oclock in the morning on September 5, 1972, Yossef Gutfreund, heard the sound of Arab voices behind the door of the apartment where he and other Israeli athletes were staying.



The terrorsts were dressed in warm-ups suits and carried their weapons in gym bags so they were able to be unnoticed. Gutfreund quickly realized that something was ill-use and proceeded to block the door to help prevent entrance. His efforts however were unsuccessful, a few moments later, the Arabs entered the apartment, taking five Israelis as hostages.
