Famous King of the Twelve-String Guitar, Huddie William Ledbetter, widely known as Leadbelly, has been expound as one of the most renowned and influential American sept artists of the 20th-Century (Mueller). Leadbelly was born on January 29th, 1885 (some sources say 1888) on the Jeter orchard in Mooringsport, Louisiana. He did not achieve any awards, withal his achievement is remarkable considering the amount of chaos in his life. He was as famous for his frequent violent temper, alcoholism, numerous meet with women, troubles with the law, and prison terms, as he is for his music. The bulk of the best performances by Leadbelly were recorded during the 1940s for Folkway Records founder Moses Asch titled Where Did You Sleep belong Night: Lead Belly Legacy, Vol. 1. This 34-song first volume is a must for anyone interested in the roots of American folk (Burger). It opens with Irene which, as Goodnight Irene, became a national hit for the Weavers shortly by and by Leadbellys death. It also includes many of his most famous songs, including rock-and-roll Island Line, Cotton Fields, and Good Morning Blues. Leadbelly became a symbol of the growing folk movement during the late 1930s and 1940s, recording and entertaining until his death.
In 1949, while touring France, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrigs Disease. He died six months later on December 6th, 1949.
