Mathematicians are pure theoretical scientists kindle in abstractions, while physicists are applied scientists interested in concrete results.
To an outside observer mathematicians and physicists are indeed signally similar. Both can look at strings of numbers and understand what they mean. Both take similar classes in uplifted school and college. Both need the gift of logical reason as well as abstract thinking. These two types of tribe often have similar personal characteristics, such as the apparent need to hoard outdated texts and other artifacts. They to a fault laugh at the same jokes and dress the same funny way, with dress slacks and tennis shoes. However, all these superficial similarities do not make mathematicians and physicists the same.
